Medically supervised weight loss — including GLP-1 therapy

Weight-loss injections are the most talked-about medicines in India right now, and the least supervised. Kushala Health provides the clinical care around them: proper assessment, correct dose escalation, side-effect management, muscle protection and a plan for what happens when you stop.

The medicine is the easy part

Getting a prescription is not treatment. What determines whether you keep the weight off is everything around it: whether you were the right candidate in the first place, whether your dose was escalated at a pace your gut could tolerate, whether your existing medicines were adjusted, whether you protected your muscle while the fat came off, and whether anyone helped you build the habits that hold when the prescription ends.

Most people in India today are getting the molecule without the medicine. That is the gap this program fills.

What supervision actually includes

Before starting: a full consultation covering your history, BMI, thyroid and gallbladder history, pancreatitis risk, family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, mental health, and every medicine you already take. Baseline labs where indicated.

While on therapy: structured dose escalation, review of nausea and reflux, hydration and constipation management, adjustment of diabetes medicines where hypoglycemia risk rises, and monthly review of weight, waist and labs.

Throughout: protein targets built for how you actually eat, resistance-training guidance to protect lean mass, and a care coach who calls you weekly rather than leaving you to interpret side effects alone.

Who this is not for

We will tell you when drug therapy is not the right answer. GLP-1 medicines are generally avoided in pregnancy and in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, and need caution with a history of pancreatitis or significant gallbladder disease. If your weight issue is driven by an untreated thyroid problem, a medicine you are taking, disordered eating or a sleep disorder, treating that comes first. An honest no is part of the service.

Common questions

What patients ask us

What is a GLP-1 medicine?

GLP-1 receptor agonists are a class of prescription medicine originally developed for type 2 diabetes and now also approved for weight management. They act on appetite signaling in the brain and on how quickly the stomach empties, so most people feel full sooner and stay full longer. They are prescription-only medicines and are not suitable for everyone.

Do I need medical supervision while on GLP-1 therapy?

Yes, and this is the part most people miss. These medicines need dose escalation at the right pace, screening for conditions in which they should be avoided, monitoring for nausea, vomiting, dehydration and gallbladder symptoms, review of other medicines including insulin and sulfonylureas where doses often need lowering, and attention to muscle mass and protein intake so the weight you lose is fat and not lean tissue.

Can Dr. Sowmya prescribe weight-loss medication?

Where it is clinically appropriate after a full consultation, yes. Suitability depends on your BMI, your other conditions, your personal and family medical history and the medicines you already take. Some people are better served without drug therapy, and the consultation is where that is decided honestly.

What happens if I stop the medicine?

Appetite usually returns and weight regain is common if nothing else has changed. This is why the program is built around habits, nutrition, resistance training and follow-up rather than the prescription alone. We plan the exit from the start, not at the end.

Will I lose muscle along with fat?

It is a genuine risk with rapid weight loss and one we actively manage, through adequate protein targets adapted to Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets, resistance training guidance, and tracking more than just the number on the scale.

How much does the program cost?

The initial consultation is Rs 1,500 and the ongoing program is Rs 2,500 per month, which covers your physician, your care coach and monthly tracking. The cost of any medicine is separate and is paid to your pharmacy, not to us.

Is this available outside Hyderabad?

Yes. Consultations are by video and patients are seen across India, in English, Telugu and Hindi.
